Officials: Houston ISD proposal won't increase taxes on homeowners

Homeowners in Houston ISD will not see an increase in their school taxes next school year if district officials have their way.

The Houston school board will consider a proposal being submitted by administrators Thursday that would maintain the district's current tax rate.

Officials say the current tax rate will fund a $1.864 billion budget the board of trustees approved for the 2015-2016 school year in June.

HISD administrators say they will also continue offering a local homestead exemption that goes beyond the state's mandated exemption.

If trustees approve the proposal, residents within HISD would have the lowest school tax rate in Harris County.
