Officials opening 4th center as thousands line up for food stamps

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Thousands of people are waiting in line this morning to apply for food stamps after Harvey in Harris County.

Officials said they will open a fourth location for Harvey victims to apply for disaster food benefits beginning Monday at the Fifth Ward Multi-Service Center on Market Street.

The center will open October 2 and serve victims through October 5.

Three other locations are currently open at these location:

Greenspoint Mall
12300 North Freeway

Southwest Multi-Service Center
6400 High Star Drive, Houston

Pasadena Convention Center
7902 Fairmont Parkway, Pasadena

These sites will also close on October 5.

As many as 7,000 people are being served at the Greenspoint location alone. The Southwest Multi-Service Center is open until 7 p.m.

Some have reported waiting up to five hours in line to apply.

There are certain requirements to be eligible for the help. You must have experienced a loss of income, destruction of your home or a disaster-related expense, such as temporary shelter or home repairs.

You must not have been getting regular SNAP food benefits. You must meet certain income limits, which you can find at the Texas Health and Human Services website.

You must also be from a county that was declared a federal disaster area.
