How Houstonians can celebrate Selena's 50th birthday today

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Fans celebrated the life of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, who would have celebrated her 50th birthday today.

It's been 26 years since the death of Tejano music superstar and pop culture icon, but the love for the singer is just as strong as before.

"She was a role model," said Maty Guzman, who took time out of her day to visit one of Selena's murals in Houston. "She was a strong figure that showed that there are other people like you."

Guzman said she's always been attracted to her music and her vigorous command over her life.

Before her birthday ends, maybe you want to place some flowers by her mural or learn about the singer's journey by watching her documentary. Regardless of how you decide to honor Selena, there are a few other ways to celebrate her life.

This week, Netflix dropped a new trailer for part two of its "Selena" series, and it includes scenes from her iconic Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo concert.

If you feel comfortable venturing out, there are a number of events commemorating Selena's 50th birthday across Houston Friday.
