Chambers Co. curfew expires as Laura's impact on area diminished
CHAMBERS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- Chambers County was among the areas spared from the worst of Hurricane Laura, which pounded southwest Louisiana with damaging winds.
Nevertheless, the county's curfew that was issued Wednesday evening should be expired as scheduled at 6 a.m. Thursday.
Within the county, peak wind gusts at Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge was measured at 41 mph, according to the National Weather Service. County leaders were anticipating tropical storm-force winds.
The storm surge danger was just as important, with roads closer to the Gulf expecting to be covered with water. Due to this, State Highway 87 remained closed Thursday morning.
Ahead of the storm, the county issued a voluntary evacuation for residents and a mandatory evacuation for those living in low-lying areas or untethered mobile homes. As of Tuesday morning, about 25-30 residents evacuated and took charter buses to San Antonio and Dallas.
Also, a group was evacuating a herd of cattle in Chambers County, trying to get the cattle to higher ground, while residents were boarding up their homes and businesses in town.
