HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A car chase near downtown Houston came to an end Thursday afternoon after the suspect ran into rush-hour traffic on Interstate 45.

The chase started around 3:40pm in the 7700 block of Thurow near the Gulf Freeway after an HPD officer tried to initiate a traffic stop.

About 30 minutes into the pursuit, the suspect ran into traffic at the I-45 and Highway 59 interchange. He got out of the car in an attempt to flee on foot, but officers arrested him at the scene.

As officers tried to clear the scene, the traffic congestion on the Pierce Elevated worsened, causing a miles-long back up on the northbound lanes of Interstate 45.
