Cab driver honored for heroic actions during Harvey
The cab driver and her elderly passenger were trapped in flood waters for 18 hours.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A Yellow Cab driver, who stayed with an elderly disabled passenger during the Harvey flood, was honored Thursday morning.

The METRO board of directors honored Ramonia McCarty and her METROlift passenger who were in the Gulfton area when they got surrounded by water for 18 hours.

McCarty was recognized as the 2017 International Driver of the Year by the International Association of Transportation Regulators.

McCarty said she experienced many emotions during their ordeal.

"I wanted to cry one minute, especially when she was asleep, just so I could kind of release some frustration because it was like nowhere to go, but God brought us through," said McCarty.

McCarty said she wanted to treat her elderly passenger as if she were her own grandmother.
