Family flooded in home rescues trapped heron

BRAZORIA COUNTY, TX (KTRK) -- A Brazoria County family is confined to their home due to flooding, but Friday they performed a water rescue.

Jason Theriot and his wife, Vandi, were watching one of the yellow-crowned night herons that frequents their pond when it became entangled in their submerged fence. They paddled over to the area and found the bird alive, but struggling.

They named the bird "Mick" after the sounds he made and put him in a dog crate to hopefully dry out his wings. A day later, Mick has dried off, but he hasn't yet flown away. Other herons have visited the Theriot's porch to see Mick.

Theriot fears that Mick may have injured his wings, but is getting stronger by the day.

Jason says Vandi has been Mick's primary caregiver, and the heron allows her to pet him.
