How to get gas for under $1/gallon
Gas prices are low, but today's low prices combined with gas rewards points make it possible to find gas for under $1 per gallon.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Gas prices are low, but today's low prices combined with gas rewards points make it possible to find gas for under $1 per gallon.

At Kroger, a regular gallon of unleaded gas was $1.75 when Eyewitness News went to fill up. We used the Kroger fuel program to take $1 off per gallon, making our grand total $0.75 per gallon or about $8 to fill up.

The Kroger fuel program allows you to earn one point for each dollar you spend at the store. After 100 points, they will take $0.10 off each gallon of fuel at participating Shell or Kroger gas stations. The maximum amount allowed off is $1 per gallon.

"Especially with all the rewards you can stack on at Kroger. Every time you shop with us, you get fuel points. When you fill a prescription, you get fuel points, when you buy gift cards especially," Kroger employee Joy Partain

explained.

Randall's gas rewards points program works the same way as Kroger's. The only difference is that Randall's partners with participating Exxon and Mobil stations to save at the pump.

Points at both stores carry over to the end of the next month. Points earned on Jan. 1 would last until Feb. 1, if you had not filled up your car yet.

But you don't have to spend $1,000 to get $1 off fuel. Purchasing gift cards to outside retailers will boost your spending. The store offers double, triple, and sometimes quadruple the points on gift card purchases.

Starting Feb. 4 through Feb. 17, Kroger will award quadruple the points on all outside retailer gift card purchases. For example, if you purchase a $25 gift card to Best Buy at Kroger, it will count the same as if you purchased $100 in Kroger groceries.

If you need to tackle a project in your home, consider purchasing Lowe's or Home Depot gift cards through Kroger.

Or if you still need a Valentine's Day gift, you could give your sweetie a gift card to all of your favorite restaurants. It will be the gift that keeps on giving, for both of you!

To score even more rewards, you can purchase all of the cards with your rewards credit card that you already have. Whether it's Discover Cash Back or your favorite airline's credit card, you can double dip and earn points at those

places as well.
