Veteran becomes homeowner for the first time
Generous donors helped make the dream of owning a home come true for a local veteran

PEARLAND, TX (KTRK) -- Army veteran, Joseph Cummings, at the age of 63, is a homeowner for the first time.

It was almost too much for words.

"Just being in a place you can call your own, that's your home, it's fascinating," said Cummings.

He has always rented but thanks to a partnership including Bank of America, WOMAN Inc. and the Texas State Affordable Housing Corporation, he's receiving a renovated house in Pearland, formerly foreclosed, mortgage-free.

"It stabilizes neighborhoods because a home is not allowed to remain vacant, lowering property values," said Bob Jones of Texas State Affordable Housing Corporation.

Cummings now has a place for family gatherings for his siblings, children and grandchildren. That's the goal according to Bobby Moore of Bank of America.

"When I think about home, I think about family, security, being secure in that, and being able to bring your family to your house," said Moore.

As Cummings walked through the house, he was near tears, despite joking he was raised never to cry.

"I've heard people say 'I own this,' but it never phased me until now," said Cummings. "This is my home."
