Big mystery remains after deadly overnight chase in southeast Houston

HOUSTON

Houston police say they were attempting to stop him at about midnight because the license plates on the vehicle he was driving did not match those which should have been on that vehicle, but the driver took off.

There was a brief chase at high speeds. Police tell us it lasted only a minute or two. The driver lost control and hit at least three trees and a parked car here near Moline and Poplar. He was ejected.

"The HPD unit was not involved in the wreck, and none of the HPD officers suffered any injuries," said Tim Trometer with the Houston Police Department.

No one else was hurt in the wreck. HPD says after further investigation, they've determined the car was not stolen. It's unclear why the vehicle had the wrong plates, and even more of a mystery is why the driver fled.

The identity of that driver has not yet been released.
