HPD: One dead, another injured in shooting over $20 in north Houston

HOUSTON

Officials tell us it all started around 10:30pm when a 15-year-old boy walked into the Greens Food Mart on Greens Parkway near Ella to try to get change for $20. Police say the clerk couldn't help.

"He proceeded to the parking lot and approached a group that was standing outside and they took money from him," said Brian Evans with the Houston Police Department.

Police say the victim left to get help and when he returned with his cousins to confront the group, they were gone. As they were leaving from the parking lot, police say their car was ambushed by two separate shooters.

In the store's surveillance video, you could see the reaction from those after hearing the shots. One man takes off running in the direction of the gunfire.

"We had a shooter that shot from the wooded area and a secondary shooter that shot from this area here at the apartment complex," Evans said.

The 15-year-old and his 25-year-old cousin were both shot. They were able to drive to a nearby apartment complex to get help but the 25-year-old didn't make it and died on the scene.

"I didn't know how to react to it. We just ran to my brother's room," said Erika Lopez.

Lopez didn't think twice after hearing gunshots right outside her window.

"I didn't want to get close to the window. I have my baby," she said.

She says she took her two-year-old and hid behind closed doors while HPD officers investigated the chaos at the Fall Lake apartment complex.

Residents who heard the gunshots say they can't believe what sparked it.

"Twenty dollars -- come on man," said one nearby resident.

Police are still searching for the suspect or suspects. They do describe one of them as a black male in his early 20s. If you have any information on this case, you are asked to please call police.
