Church leaders say the theft was not an electronic data breach. The theft includes contributions of cash, checks and envelopes containing written credit card information, and was limited to those gifts given on Saturday and Sunday.
Church officials say members were not affected if they put the offering in a drop box, and if they gave online or made a bookstore purchase.
But still, others are urged to monitor their financial accounts over the next several weeks.
Lakewood leaders say they're working with police to investigate the theft. They add that the funds are insured, and they are working with the insurance company to restore the stolen funds to the church.
Anyone with questions is encouraged to contact the Lakewood customer service department at 713-491-1506.
