Man brutally attacked with hammer outside Philadelphia deli; suspect surrenders

WEST PHILADELPHIA, PA

Surveillance video, obtained exclusively by our sister station, 6ABC Action News in Philadelphia, shows the surprise attack Thursday on 46-year-old David Woods.

He was using an ATM inside the deli. When he came outside, the suspect ran up and strated beating him with a hammer.

Woods' employee was nearby and tried to no avail to stop the attack. Action News reports that the suspect then came back to kick and hit Woods while he was helplessly lying on the sidewalk.

The father of three was reportedly hit so hard, he can't even speak.

Woods had surgery for a massive head injury and was well enough to finally be released from the hospital Monday, but he will likely have to go through intensive speech therapy before he can talk again.

The suspect was identified as Nathanial Maybin, 29. He turned himself in yesterday and reportedly told police robbery was the motive. He will be charged with attempted murder and robbery.
