It happened a little before 2pm at the Arcadian Kirby apartments not far from the Medical Center.
Police say a resident heard someone breaking into an apartment and called leasing office. Houston police say a UT officer working an off-duty security job there responded to the initial call from leasing office.
That officer went to the front door and found it open.
"He then enters the apartment and the suspect immediately rushes him and attempts to struggle with him," said Jodi Silva with the Houston Police Department. "They struggle and at that point, the officer, in fear for his life, discharges his duty weapon."
The suspect died at the scene. As for the officer, he was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
