HPD: Suspected copper thief caught red-handed at CenterPoint power substation in southwest Houston

According to investigators, the man cut a hole in a fence at a CenterPoint power substation and went to work cutting wires

Police say they caught a copper thief red-handed, stealing copper from a power substation off of the Southwest Freeway this morning.

It happened around 3am at the CenterPoint Energy substation at Wakeforest in southwest Houston.

According to investigators, the suspect cut a hole in a fence and went to work cutting wires.

Police were alerted after surveillance monitors went off, and they surrounded the location.

Officials said the suspect surrendered without incident. Police recovered some tools and cut wires.
