Girl, 6, found safe at store after reported kidnapping in northwest Houston

It was a happy ending for a family who was little girl taken from her family's apartment complex on Wirt Road at about 4pm Wednesday.

The six-year-old girl was abducted from her apartment complex. She was gone for an hour before being reunited with her mom.

"This is about as good as it can get," HPD Sgt. Matthew Brady said.

It's the best ending to one of the worst scenarios imaginable.

A six-year-old girl who was playing with ice on the fence of her apartment complex was kidnapped by a total stranger in broad daylight.

"Yeah, she heard the daughter screaming," Brady said.

The girl's mother dropped the laundry she was tending to just in time to catch a glimpse of the man abducting her little girl.

"The girl ran couple yards, he chased her, picked her up, put her in the vehicle, closed the door and drove off," Brady said.

The mother tried to chase the kidnapper but lost him. An hour went by before police got a call from employees at a Target store in the Memorial City Mall. The abductor had walked the girl inside the store and left her there by herself.

"All we can do is be thankful that he took her somewhere and dropped her off, For whatever reason he did that. We're lucky that that's what he did," Brady said.

The mother and daughter reunited at that Target, and the whole family is thankful she's safe and unharmed.

The man police are looking foris described as a white or Hispanic male in his late teens or early 20s. He has a tall and skinny build, with short dark hair. He was wearing a black T-shirt with yellow or green writing on the front, and dark colored jeans. He was seen driving a late model, gray or silver Jeep Cherokee.

Right now, detectives think he is a stranger and not related to the family. They are still looking into why the man took the child in the first place.
