Mom says first grader wandered alone after bus mix-up

HOUSTON

Claudia Carvajal says her son had been riding the bus from Bush Elementary to the babysitter's home after school. Last week, Carvajal filled out a form and changed the boy's transportation plans. He is now supposed to be picked up by his grandmother at the school.

However, Monday afternoon, the child was mistakenly put on the bus, while his grandmother waited at the school. He was dropped off along Club Creek Street in southwest Houston, and wandered around until relatives found him and picked him up.

Alief ISD says the teacher tried to contact the boy's mother several times Monday morning to double check her son's transportation options. However, the district says the teacher did make a mistake, and shouldn't have put the child on the bus.

The principal of Bush Elementary has already held a staff-wide meeting, informing teachers that if there is any doubt as to how students are supposed to get home, they should be held at school until officials are certain.
