Police: Rosenberg man says he was returning stolen van because it was nearly out of gas

RICHMOND, TX

It happened late last night. The van, belonging to the Little Oaks Learning Center in the 2100 block of Thompson Highway, was stopped after the driver, identified as Deion Montra Johnson, 18, of Rosenberg, ran a stop sign on Mustang Avenue.

While pulled over, police say Johnson told them he had stolen the van earlier in the day, but was returning it because it was nearly out of gas.

Police later discovered the building that houses the daycare was broken into earlier and in that break-in, the keys to the van were taken.

Johnson was arrested by Richmond police and charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and burglary of a building. Both charges are state jail felonies. He's being held at the Fort Bend County Jail awaiting bond.

Police believe Johnson had someone with him at some point after the van was taken, but he was alone when he was arrested.
