Training planned in area of 2011 Texas wildfires

CAMP SWIFT, TX

The Texas A&M Forest Service joins with more than a dozen other agencies Wednesday in the project at Camp Swift. The Texas Army National Guard facility is in Bastrop County, 30 miles east of Austin.

Forest Service program special Mary Leathers said Tuesday that three spots of about an acre apiece will be studied. Drones will help document how fire burns under certain weather and conditions.

Leathers says research has been going on since the 2011 Texas wildfires to study how some trees survived.

Those wildfires claimed 95 percent of the trees in Bastrop State Park while destroying nearly 1,700 homes. Two people died.
