Man charged in Houston's first deadly accident of 2014

A pickup and Mercedes collided at the intersection of Pierce and Milam in downtown at 1am Wednesday, in what became the first deadly traffic accident of the year for Houston.

Diego Baldemar Islas, 21, is charged with intoxication manslaughter. According to witnesses, Islas was driving a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck eastbound on Pierce and ran the red light at the intersection of Milam. The Chevrolet then struck a white Mercedes C230.

Police say the rear passenger in the Mercedes died at the scene. His identity has not been released.

The driver of the Mercedes and a passenger in the Chevrolet were transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital with minor injuries and are expected to survive. Police say Islas was found to be intoxicated and subsequently charged.
