Pope names Austin priest as new San Angelo bishop

SAN ANGELO, TX

The Rev. Michael Sis has served as the vicar general of the Austin Catholic diocese since 2010. Bishop Michael Pfeifer introduced Sis as his successor in San Angelo on Thursday, and Sis is scheduled for installation on Jan. 27.

Pfeifer submitted his resignation on his 75th birthday, consistent with Catholic custom in recent years.

Sis is a 53-year-old Mount Holly, N.J., native who was ordained as a priest in Austin in 1986 and has served numerous parishes in Austin and College Station since.

The San Angelo diocese covers more than 29 West Texas counties. About nine percent of its 860,000 residents are Catholic.
