New Houston community center opens in honor of civil rights icon Leonel Castillo days after his death

HOUSTON

The Leonel J. Castillo community center held its grand opening on the north side Saturday.

Castillo was supposed to help cut the ribbon, but he died Monday at age 74. A memorial mass is being held at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Monday at 2pm.

In 1971, Castillo became the first Hispanic person elected to city office in Houston.

The center named for him will focus on health and education programs for people of all ages.
