The accident happened in the 4700 block of Almeda Genoa at MLK intersection, and neighbors in the area said scenes like this one are all too familiar to them.
"It was upside down on the roof, right here; burning, engulfed in flames," nearby resident Terry Thomas said.
Thomas was on his way home early Sunday when he passed the violent crash.
Houston police said a car on Almeda Genoa failed to stop at the stop sign at intersection of Almeda Genoa and MLK, and struck a pickup truck traveling on MLK. The truck did not have a stop sign.
"The driver of the Honda seems to have run the stop sign and the Ford pickup truck that was traveling westbound on Almeda Genoa struck the Honda as it was turning onto Almeda Genoa," HPD Sgt. J.R. Roberts said.
The car rolled over into ditch. The pickup truck rolled over and caught fire.
Officials said two people in the pickup were trapped inside and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car was rushed to Ben Taub General Hospital. At last check, that driver remained in critical condition but is expected to recover.
People who live and work near the intersection say crashes there are not uncommon.
"In a month, they have like four or five wrecks in a full month," said Subudh Mane, who works nearby.
"They need to put a light right here," Thomas said. "Because if not, some more people are going to get killed."
