It happened at a home off Oak Knoll at Old Houston Road around 10pm last night. It was a 911 call from the 12-year-old granddaughter of the murdered couple that led deputies to the home. She told 911 that her uncle, Joseph Branstetter, 24, had shot her grandparents. She then waited alone outside for help to arrive.
"The witness was able to provide information about her uncle who had done the shooting and a vehicle description," said Dan Morris with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.
Detectives say they found Cathy Gibbs, 58, lying dead outside of the home. Her husband, Randall Branstetter, 54, was found dead inside.
"Shortly after though, the suspect returned to the home and got out of his truck and our deputies took him into custody," Morris said.
According to the Montgomery County sheriff's department, the gun they believed Branstetter used to kill his parents was recovered in his truck.
Neighbors we spoke with say they can't believe such a horrific crime happened so close.
"I think it's kind of tragic cause she seems like a nice enough lady," said nearby resident Willie Prizkau.
Branstetter is charged with capital murder and he is being held without bond at the Montgomery County jail. At this time, detectives have not been able to release a motive in this case.
