The accident happened at about 11:15am on the inbound lanes of the Eastex Freeway near Beltway 8. HPD spokesperson Jodi Silva says the officer was clearing debris off the freeway when a pickup hit his squad car. The squad car then struck the officer.
The officer, whose name has not been released, was taken to Memorial Hermann Texas Trauma Institute, where he is hospitalized in fair condition.
Officials shut down the freeway to traffic during the investigation, but it has since reopened. The driver of the pickup truck was ticketed for failure to control speed.
