Michigan trooper fatally shot during traffic stop

HART, MI

Trooper Paul Butterfield stopped a vehicle in Mason County's Sherman Township at 6:20 p.m. Monday. Three minutes later a motorist called 911 saying a trooper had been shot in the head. Butterfield died during emergency surgery.

Sherman Township is 80 miles north of Grand Rapids.

A vehicle later was found based on information Butterfield had called in. Police located two suspects at a gas station around 8:30 p.m. Police and the suspects exchanged gunfire and one suspect was shot.

A man and woman were taken into custody. The man was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Gov. Rick Snyder says Butterfield's death is a "grim reminder" of the dangers involved in protecting the public.
