HPD chief involved in accident with pedestrian in downtown Houston

HOUSTON

The Houston Police Department confirms Chief Charles McClelland was involved in an accident involving a pedestrian at about 8:15am when he was driving into the office. Chief McClelland was headed eastbound on Clay, turning left on a green light to go north on Travis when a pedestrian walked into the intersection.

Police say the man was bumped by Chief McClelland's car and suffered minor injuries. He was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital for treatment.

Chief McClelland estimated he was driving about two miles per hour at the time of the accident. He tried to visit the victim in the hospital.

"It's very unnerving to strike somebody with a vehicle and know that they may have received an injury," Chief McClelland said. "It's not a good way to start a day. But it also kind of highlights how we all should be extremely careful in the downtown business district."

The victim was treated and released. The accident is under investigation.
