Officer fatally shoots suspect at SW Houston apartment complex

HOUSTON

It happened around 7:20pm at Rama Apartments in the 9200 block of Woodfair at Club Creek, near Beechnut and Beltway 8.

According to the Houston Police Department, someone called 911 and reported a disturbance between several men at the apartment complex. The caller told dispatchers one of the men was armed.

Two officers arrived at the scene and witnesses pointed them toward a man in the courtyard.

Police said the officers approached the man and told him to pull his hands out of his pockets. That's when the man allegedly pulled out a gun and pointed it directly at the officers.

One officer -- Ofc. J. Medina, who has been with HPD for one year -- fired and struck the suspect more than once, officials said.

"A lot of times, sometimes we have shooting where they don't have a gun. This just goes to how that you never know," HPD spokesperson John Cannon said. "When you don't show your hands and you've got your hands in your pockets, and all of a sudden you're pulling a gun, that officer had no choice."

The suspect was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital, where he later died after surgery. The 28-year-old man's name has not been released.

No one else was injured.

Investigators recovered the suspect's weapon and are interviewing several witnesses who saw it all unfold.
