Police shoot, wound Austin man who hit patrol car

AUSTIN, TX

Police Chief Art Acevedo says the incident occurred overnight Saturday when officers responded to an alarm call.

Officers found two men loading items into a car. The Austin American-Statesman reports (http://bit.ly/197noPi) that when they activated the lights, the men jumped in the car, backed up and hit the police car. The officer yelled for the suspects to raise their hands. The passenger complied, but the driver hit the patrol car again.

Acevedo says the officer fired, injuring the 48-year-old driver. The driver is being treated in the hospital. The passenger has been arrested.

The officer has a leg injury and has been placed on customary administrative leave.
