Child Protective Services says doctors are checking that baby for signs of abuse and neglect. The bizarre and confusing case unfolded at an apartment building where tenants say that baby was left alone in a staircase. But one woman says this all boils down to baby mama drama.
Tenants throughout Northline Point Apartments were buzzing all day. Many were worried after hearing a baby was found abandoned in the staircase of Building 3 on Thursday morning.
Neighbor Markita Phearse said, "The baby was sitting outside, wrapped up, full of boo boo and pee. The baby was crying. Cats was on the baby."
Several neighbors in the complex say they saw the child in a car seat.
"Whoever left the baby there needs to go to jail," said neighbor Dakarie Kees.
According to Child Protective Services, a woman in the building told investigators she found the baby crying outside her second floor apartment. She then took it inside and called 911 after recognizing that infant to be her boyfriend's child.
Neighbors say the baby's biological mother arrived at the complex after the fire department picked up the baby.
Neihbor Tamika Sexton said, "She looked lost, confused, she didn't know what was going on. She didn't know which way to go. She was looking for her baby."
Now investigators say they are interviewing the child's parents and family members trying to get to the bottom of what happened.
A woman from the apartment at the center of this investigation ran from our cameras Thursday afternoon. But we did try getting answers from a neighbor who ordered that woman to run and hide.
"I'll say it again sir, I'm not able to say what's going on in that household," neighbor Clarissa Nealey said. "Whatever the police discussed, whatever the ambulance discussed, I don't know."
CPS says case workers are interviewing family members. The baby was taken to LBJ Hospital for evaluation. Find Demond on Facebook at ABC13DemondFernandez or on Twitter at @demondfernandez
