Cow wandering on North Freeway in Houston hit, killed by car

HOUSTON

The cow was headed north in the southbound lanes of the North Freeway at Gulf Bank around 3am.

Stacy Holcombe says she came over a hill and saw the cow running toward her, but she didn't have time to swerve.

"All of a sudden, I see a cow. That was it," she said.

She hit the cow with the right fender of her car and sent it flying, and then she watched as other drivers immediately reacted to the accident.

"They were all just trying to get over once they realized that it was a cow right there in the lane," Holcombe said. "They were trying to get over, trying to avoid the cow."

A wrecker driver and a Houston Police Department patrol car were among those behind her. Both managed to swerve to avoid the animal.

The cow was killed. Holcombe was not hurt.

Police said they received a report earlier in the evening that there were three cows loose on the feeder road, but they had not been able to find them. Officers tell us they don't know who owns the cows, and there is no active search for them.
