Big rig accident shut down I-45 near Willis for hours

HOUSTON

The accident happened just before 4:30am on the North Freeway near FM 830.

The driver was heading southbound between FM 1097 and FM 830 when apparently two deer appeared on the roadway in front of him. The driver swerved to avoid hitting the animals but that caused him to lose control. The rig crossed a couple of lanes, struck a concrete barrier, flipped to its side and caught fire.

The driver was able to escape through a small opening in the passenger door and ran from the truck. He suffered minor injuries.

Crews were on the scene for hours removing debris from the wreckage and a HazMat team cleaned up the spilled diesel fuel. A concrete barrier was damaged in the wreck and had to be repaired.

All traffic was forced to exit FM 830 southbound. The highway was finally reoepened before noon.

A fatal wreck caused major delays on I-45 southbound at FM 1960. The accident happened before 4am. Police say a pickup truck apparently slammed into an 18-wheeler. Three main lanes were closed, as were two frontage roads and the shoulder. Crews cleared the accident just before 9am.
