Home invasion in north Houston leaves homeowner dead, another person injured

HOUSTON

Police say the gunman burst into the home around 9:30pm Monday in the 600 block of Woodcrest.

Family members say the victim has several young children, elementary and middle school age. They asked us to move back from the home, which we did, as the children had not yet been told of their father's death.

Police say two men forced their way into this home here, demanding money. At some point during the robbery, investigators say, at least one of the intruders fired his weapon.

Richard Cruz, 31, was killed. Another man who was inside the home was seriously hurt.

The family tells us Cruz was wheelchair bound. We don't know if he even had a chance to defend himself.

Those living nearby say they are stunned.

"It's sad because I know he had kids you know. I cried because of it. He used to live here and then moved over there. It's sad," neighbor Alyssa Wilkins said.

Detectives can't say how the other man who was wounded is now doing.

Police do not have a good working description of the suspects. They fled after the shooting.

If you know where to find them investigators ask that you call the Houston Police Department.
