Suspect who escaped custody while being booked into downtown Houston jail captured

HOUSTON

According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, Jonathan Richmond, 29, was in cuffs as he was being booked into the downtown Houston jail at around 5pm. That's when he took off running.

Both the sheriff's office and Houston police searched for him in the area around Buffalo Bayou, which runs behind the booking and releasing centers.

Then around 7:15pm, he was spotted hiding in a brush on Austin and Commerce Streets, about 50 yards from the jail's inmate processing center.

Richmond had originally been arrested in Harris County on a larceny warrant issued in Jefferson County. Now he may also face escape charges.

Meanwhile, the Harris County Sheriff's Office will review booking procedures. A Houston Police Department helicopter, Sheriff's Reserve Marine Unit and K9 units helped conduct the search for the inmate.

We're following this story and will have any new details as they become available.
