I-10 at Highway 59 open after emergency construction project finishes early

HOUSTON The wreck happened shortly before 2:45pm Friday on the westbound lanes of Interstate 10 at the Interstate 45 North exit.

Officials from the Texas Department of Transportation say an 18-wheeler was carrying a 48,000-pound reel of steel when the rig somehow overturned and the steel bounced off, causing a gaping hole in the freeway.

Authorities said even though the damage did not appear to be structural, there were multiple areas on the highway where concrete was broken, and they required emergency, full-depth repairs. Officials expected the repairs to continue through 10am Sunday, but the highway reopened around 9pm Saturday.

The driver was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital with a cut to his arm.

No citation has yet been issued but authorities are still investigating the wreck.
