Young sisters' bath products business paying off

HOUSTON

Abby and Izzy Plunkett already have college expenses on their minds. They found something they are passionate about and their enthusiasm is contagious. The Plunketts make and sell specialty bath salts.

"I love doing this because it's just like making sand castles," Abby said.

"She's wonderful at sand castles. She has to help me when I make sand castles," Izzy said.

The sisters are on a mission to save money after being inspired by a school experiment.

"They wanted to know what makes the fizz in a bath bomb. So I knew it was simple chemistry, we looked it up," said their mother, Jennifer Plunkett.

And just like that, Blossom Sisters Bathery was born.

"They were a lots of fun to make. And we had a whole lot so we decided to sell them to neighbors, friends and family. They all really liked it too," Abby said.

They began going door to door and also setting up shop at local spots.

"This is a picture of the girls at their very first booths. We set up in front of a café," Jennifer said. "The girls sold their first products to the general public."

What makes their venture successful is that the girls truly are in charge.

"It is the girls' business, they make the decisions. I am there to help them," Jennifer said.

Jennifer says their prices are low and competitive.

"The Izzy's Fizzies, which is a bath bomb, you need just one for each bath. We only charge $3, and in the store, those can range anywhere from $5 to $8," she said.

"Then you've got soaking salts," Jennifer said. "Depending on the size of the jar it can be $3 to $5."

Right from the start, both sisters agreed they wanted to save the money they made.

"All the profit the girls make will go directly into their college fund," Jennifer said.

"So we have enough money for books, and we have a good college," Abby said.

It hasn't taken long to see results.

"It's adding up. I think they've earned about $500 in the last nine months," Jennifer said.

Using science and teamwork to make money and memories, the two sisters also have started young in the business world.

"I like doing it with my sister because sometimes I can't see her because she's at swim practice. So it's time that I can see her," Izzy said.

The Plunkett sisters shared the following three recipes with us so you can make your own bath salts:

Chocolate Mint Milk Bath

  • 1 scoop of powdered goats milk
  • 1 1/2 cup Epsom Salt
  • 8 drops chocolate essential oils
  • 8 drops peppermint essential oils
Mix together the goats milk and Epsom salt. Add the essential oils and shake again.

Blossom Sisters Soaking Salt

  • 1 1/2 cup of Epsom salt
  • 8 drops of cedar essential oil
  • 8 drops of rose essential oil
  • 1 scoop of dried rose petals
Mix all ingredients together and shake it up. Use a scoop or so to each bath to help aching muscles.

Izzy's Fizzies

  • 2 cups baking soda
  • 1 cup citric acid
  • 1/4 cup sea salt
  • 1 scoop coconut oil
  • water
  • 8 drops each of essential oils: coconut, orange, pineapple, grapefruit
Mix baking soda and citric acid in bowl. Add one scoop of coconut oil and work it in (like a pie crust). Then, add 1/4 cup of sea salt. Then, add the essential oils. you can add food coloring if you would like - just about 4-5 drops. While mixing have someone else spray water on the mixture. When it gets to be the consistency of sand castle sand, stop. Then, put the mixture in molds and quickly put the molded shape on a piece of wax paper. Allow it to dry for about 24 hours. Add to a bath for a fizzy, relaxing treat!
