Daniel Hernandez spoke at a leadership summit for the National Society of Collegiate Scholars on Saturday. Sunday, he will teach valuable life-saving skills to college students, assisting in training members in CPR and first aid.
"Hopefully if they're ever in an awful situation, I hope they never have to be in one, but if they are, they'll have the skills that they need to be able to step in and help others and hopefully do the same thing that I did for somebody else," Hernandez said.
Hernandez had only been working for Giffords for five days when she was shot. He helped control her breathing and helped contain her bleeding by applying pressure to her wound until paramedics arrived.
He says he trained as a nursing assistant in high school and that anyone with the same skills could have done what he did. Now he wants to help other students.
