Juneteenth celebrations being held in Galveston, Houston

HOUSTON

Since Galveston was the first place in Texas slaves heard of the Emancipation Proclamation, the city will be kicking off one of the many celebrations in our area. The 34th Annual Al Edwards Emancipation Proclamation reading and prayer breakfast will be held at the Ashton Villa on Broadway at 8:30am. The event is free to the public.

Houston is also going to be celebrating Juneteenth today. Emancipation Park on Dowling at Elgin will be open from 11am until 8pm. The 141st annual Juneteenth Festival will start at 4pm.

There will be music, food and even story time about how slaves learned about their freedom here in Texas.
