Houston-area man gets nearly 7 years for health care fraud

HOUSTON

A federal judge in Houston on Thursday sentenced 55-year-old Abdul Waheed Alex Shittu in the nearly $1.2 million health care scam.

The naturalized U.S. citizen from Nigeria last November pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit health care fraud and aggravated identity theft.

Prosecutors say Shittu owned S&S Medical Supply Etc. in Stafford. He paid recruiters to fake physician orders for items such as braces and wheelchairs for Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. The doctors never saw the patients.

Investigators say the health care scheme went back to 2008.
