Police shock man during standoff in NW Houston

HOUSTON

A Houston police spokesperson says a man in his late 20s with a history of mental illness lives with his mother in an apartment in the 9300 block of Clay Road. The man and his mother were outside Thursday morning when an argument reportedly began over him using a car.

The man allegedly tried to choke his mother and ran into the apartment. She was unhurt, and called police.

SWAT officers tried to talk the man into coming out of the apartment, and even tried to enter with a key, but found the door to be barricaded. The man was alone in the apartment, and refused to come out.

After a couple of hours, officers entered the apartment and found the man with several kitchen knives near him. He reportedly refused their verbal commands and, fearing he may reach for one, officers used a Taser on the man in order to secure him from the weapons.

The man was taken into custody, and was transported to Ben Taub Hosptial for psychiatric evaluation. He is expected to face charges for assaulting his mother.

No one else was hurt in the incident.
