Texas City robbery suspect dies after exchanging gunfire with victim

TEXAS CITY, TX

Police were initially called to a report of multiple gunshots just before 3am in the 1100 block of 1st Avenue South. The first officer at the scene met with the victim -- a resident of the block identified by police as 60-year-old Enrique Herrera.

According to investigators, Herrera had been shot once in the upper thigh.

Herrera told police he was parking in his driveway when two males approached him on either side of his car.

One of the suspects told Herrera to "give it up," officials said.

Herrera was armed at the time. He told police he pulled out his handgun, but one of the suspects pulled out a gun as well. Both men fired a shot at each other. Herrera was hit in the leg and the men fled.

Police put out descriptions of the two suspects and authorities tracked them quickly. One officer stopped a suspect named Jermaine White, 23, in the area. He was detained and subsequently charged with aggravated robbery.

Another officer spotted the second man in a field. As they approached, they realized he was dead.

The deceased suspect has been identified as 26-year-old LaKendrick Deon Nelson of La Marque. He was wearing a ski masks and gloves.
