A second arrest has been made in the beating and burning death of a man last month in west Houston.

Maurice Eugene Hollis, 24, was arrested yesterday and charged with murder. Hollis' arrest follows the arrest earlier this month of Esterrell Simpson, 18, in the April 21 killing of a man identified by family members as Carlos Hernandez near an apartment complex in the 1300 block of Witte Road.

According to witnesses, Hollis and another man beat Hernandez and doused him with gasoline before Simpson lit him on fire.

Officials say they still don't know if the victim was targeted or randomly chosen, but either way, the attack was vicious.

"He was severely burned -- 92 percent of his body. Visually, he is unidentifiable," HPD homicide Sgt. William Bush said.

Simpson was arrested in Louisiana earlier this week. Police are still looking for one more person.

Anyone with information about this case should contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
