It happened around 3:30pm in an apartment complex in the 1300 block of Cedar Post Lane.
According to police, the victim was behind the wheel of a van and his mother was in the passenger seat. They were parked at the complex when one man walked up and began talking to the victim. Then a second man came up and opened fire.
The teen put the van in reverse but crashed. The suspects ran off, and the victim, who's said to be in his late teens, died at the scene.
Police believe the teen was targeted, and the shooting was possibly gang-related. The victim's friends say he was supposed to graduate from high school on Saturday.
The mom wasn't injured in the shooting. She was taken downtown to be questioned by investigators.
A Spring Branch ISD bus was in the vicinity when the shooting happened, but it wasn't immediately known whether any students were aboard the bus.
"The school bus had a camera on it and it's possible that the camera from the school bus may have captured something. So the school police came out to allow us access to that video so that we can review it and see what's on there, if it's anything that we could use," Houston Police Department Sgt. James Racus.
The investigation is ongoing.
