Harris County District Attorney Mike Anderson battling cancer

HOUSTON

He issued the following statement:

    "To my D.A. Family,
I have been diagnosed with cancer. I have great doctors and am undergoing treatment. I fully intend to beat this.
Many people have asked how they can help me. I would ask that you keep me and my family in your prayers and continue to do the great work that you're doing to make this the best D.A's office in these United States.
    Proud to serve with you,
    Mike"
No further details about his medical condition are available.

"I am deeply saddened to hear of Mike Anderson's recent diagnosis with cancer," said HCCLA President Todd Dupont. "On behalf of the Harris County Criminal Lawyers Association, I would like the Anderson family to know, without waiver, that the defense bar completely stands behind him and supports him and his loved ones during these trying times. We wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to him returning to the courthouse. I wish him Godspeed."

The announcement brings lots of questions and concerns about Anderson, and the possible ramifications for the district attorney's office.

"What I would anticipate and be optimistic about is that the district attorney's office would rally around Mr. Anderson and run the day to day operations in the manner in which he would see fit and in the manner in which he would actually perform those duties," Dupont said.

Anderson took office in January of this year, succeeding Pat Lykos, who was voted out after one term. He promised to restore integrity to the office.
