It happened around 2am Saturday at the Cabo San Lucas Apartments at 9220 Nathaniel Street, which is near the Gulf Freeway and Ledge Street.
According to homicide investigators, an armed suspect kicked in the front door of an apartment and demanded something from the victim. It's unclear what the gunman demanded.
The victim was shot once and died at the scene, police said.
Officials said the victim's girlfriend and uncle were in the apartment as well. They were not injured.
The suspect fled the scene. No description is available at this time.
