JJ Watt a superstar in Houston - on and off the field

HOUSTON

He has quickly become a superstar in his adopted hometown, and much of that love has little to do with football.

Watt has made a name for himself on the field, but his likeability extends beyond the gridiron.

"A lot of Houston likes him because he's just a really nice guy," fan Mason Stone said.

"He does a lot of good things for everybody, and he's really good at everything he does," fan Amanda Loggins told us.

We caught up with fans who attended his foundation's charity softball game -- the J.J. Watt Charity Classic -- this weekend, and they love Watt for who he is, not just what he does.

"He presents himself as a hometown guy, real laid back, easy going," fan Brian Ousley said. "He's out and about."

"He's a good guy on and off the field," fan Amanda Ousely said. "He does a lot for other people."

It's clear that Watt has become a beloved figure here in Houston in just a couple of years, but we wanted to ask him why he thinks so many people think so much of him.

"I don't know. I don't know, but I sure appreciate it," Watt said. "I think it's a connection. I think we have a connection."

And he does connect with his fans.

"I think he's an excellent player. He really gives back to the community," fan Chris Rodriguez said. "He shows love towards the fans and he's a real people person."

"I like him: one, because he's handsome; two, because he's really dedicated," fan Alexia Sousa said. "He's a good hard worker."

He shows hard work and dedication, on and off the field.

"It means more to me to be a great person than it does to be a great football player," Watt said. "And I want to be a damn good football player, so I have to be a dang great person to keep up with that."

Watt's foundation has already raised a quarter of a million dollars to help children with after-school programs. That's not including Saturday's charity softball game, which Watt expected would net another $300,000.
