Two-alarm fire breaks out at vacant hospital near downtown Houston

HOUSTON

Firefighters got to the scene just after 2am and found flames shooting through the roof at the hospital on Dart and Elder. They called a second alarm a few minutes later.

It took only about 15 minutes to get the fire under control, but in the process, one firefighter suffered a minor injury.

"He was making entry on the side of the building and a piece of tile fell off," said Jay Evans with the Houston Fire Department. "Fortunately, it hit the back brim of his helmet and bounced off his shoulder, so he's going to have a bruised shoulder, but he's going to be OK."

Firefighters got a call for a dumpster fire at almost the exact same time that the call came in for this fire. Arson investigators will be looking into exactly how and where the fire started.
