Houstonians plant trees in community on Earth Day

HOUSTON

Dozens of people came together Monday morning at the Wesley Community Center on Lorraine at Gano to plant trees. They call it a "Garden in a Village," essentially an "Urban Orchard." The project is expected to serve as a learning tool for kids in the neighborhood.

"It'll teach them about sustainability. It'll teach them about how they grow. It's a science project for the kids as well. It'll teach them about taking care of their neighborhood and having pride in their neighborhood and respecting our earth, said community outreach manager Victoria Garcia .

Volunteers planted fig, pear, peach and lemon trees as well as some blackberry bushes.
