Homeless advocates call for city to repeal ban on digging through open trash cans

HOUSTON

We first told you about that law two weeks ago. A homeless Navy veteran was ticketed for rummaging through a trash can at Hermann Park. A local civil rights lawyer calls the rule unconstitutional. A homeless advocate says the man was just trying to find something to eat.

"People need to eat, period. That's the bottom line. That is a right for every human being and we would hope that the city would take the initiative to understand that. This man was looking for food; that was it," said Shere Dore, homeless advocate.

City leaders are expected to discuss throwing that ban out during a council meeting on Wednesday.
