New head of Port of Houston Commission Janiece Longoria makes history

The new head of the Port of Houston Commission is making history.

The Houston City Council and Harris County Commissioners' Court unanimously named Janiece Longoria as the new port commission chairman. Longoria is the first woman and first minority to lead the commission.

Longoria thanked the city and county for putting their trust in her.

"And believing in my ability to lead the Port of Houston at this very critical time as we prepare for the opening of the Panama Canal and make, become ready for increased traffic and greater economic prosperity for this region," she said.

Longoria was first appointed to the port commission in September 2002.
